Scroll… no. Scroll… no. Scroll… maybe?
Hunched over your keyboard scrolling through job board after job board. Page after page of job posts and you might not find a single good option in all the listings.
It is time consuming and frustrating, but it does not have to be this way. There are some tricks for searching job boards which will save you time, making your search more efficient and garnering better results.
Keep reading for my six tips for getting the most out of your job board search.
6 Tips for Finding Good Opportunities on Job Boards
1. Keywords
Think about the job you want and your experience, and then type in keywords that make sense for that job description. Instead of a generic search in your vertical such as “marketing,” “customer service,” or “accounting,” type in keywords that will narrow it down further. Here are some examples:
Product Marketing Specialist Consumer Technology
Customer Service Representative Telephone Support
Licensed CPA Strategic Tax Planning
By being specific you can narrow in on the best matches.
2. Use an industry-specific job board
Some industries have their own job boards. Instead of going to Monster or Indeed and scrolling through mass posts, try finding a job board that specializes in your industry or role. Some of these specialized job boards include:
USAJOBS – For government roles
Idealist – For nonprofit jobs
Wellfound – For startups
Dice – For tech
Behance – For artists, designers, and digital creators
Snagajob – For hourly and part-time work
We Work Remotely – If you only want remote opportunities
There are many more focused boards, so give those a go and see what you find.
3. Set up alerts
Get roles that fit your parameters sent directly to your inbox. Many job boards and companies themselves allow you to set up an alert for specific jobs and titles. This will save you time from having to go in every day and search.
4. Filter by date
You may not realize it, but not all job boards are in date-posted order. You could be scrolling through jobs that are over a month old and already filled. Find the most recent posts by searching by date. Check if there is an “apply by” date on the post as well, if not, skip anything that is older than two weeks.
5. Check company websites directly
If you have a company that is a dream company, check their internal job board directly. Most companies have a “Careers” or similar link on the website with recent openings. It can be better to check the company’s own job board rather than hunt for them on a job aggregator site. If available, set up an alert as mentioned above.
6. Use advanced filters
Did you know that most job boards offer additional filters? You may be able to select mileage from your home, salary range, remote/hybrid/on-site preferences, and other filters. This can help weed out roles that are too far away or do not meet your income needs.
Navigating job boards with ease
Going back day after day to scan the same jobs in a job board is not the best use of your time. By being specific and narrowing down your search with keywords and filters, and also using other tools such as alerts, you can make the most of your time on job boards. Tapping industry-specific job boards can also cut down on scrolling through unnecessary posts.
