You got it! You got the job!
They just called you and offered you a position. Congratulations!
Now you get to think about the position, reflect on your interviews, read the offer letter, and decide if this is a job you want to take. It is important to keep both immediate needs and longevity in mind. Yes, you obviously want a new job, but ideally you will be able to secure one where you will be able to stay for some time.
So, how do you know if this job is the right fit?
How to Know if a Job Is the Right Fit
Meets your salary and benefits needs
Ideally you would not have interviewed for, or gone forward with the interview process, if this piece was not met.
Any new job or next step should meet your income and benefits needs. That means salary or hourly wage are competitive and on point, as well as medical, dental, pet insurance, time off/PTO, etc., are all in alignment with where you want them to be.
You are excited about the work itself
To know if a job is the right fit, think about what you will be doing all day. Does the work excite you? Do you enjoy regular tasks that will be part of the role? Will you be able to meet expectations and feel confident in your work?
You will want to be happy at your next job, so make sure that you will enjoy the majority of your responsibilities.
Culture fit
What kind of vibe did you get from the manager and the team? Does management style line up with your work style? Did the team seem welcoming? Part of being happy at work and making sure the job will be the right fit is knowing that you mesh with the company culture.
Whatever the culture might be, make sure that it is a good fit for your personality and work atmosphere preferences.
Mission accomplished
Some people care more about company mission and vision than others. If you are someone who wants to feel like they are working for a company that offers a strong mission and vision so that you can contribute to those efforts and find a deeper connection to your work, then this is an absolute must.
If this is important to you, ensure a good fit with your next company by examining its mission and vision and making sure those align with your values.
The little details
Another facet of knowing if the job is the right fit for you is that all the little details meet your needs. How is the commute? Are you going to be able to easily get to and from work? Are the work hours good for your schedule? Can they accommodate any flexibility you need?
If the job is amazing, but the commute is horrible and you’ll be spending hours a day getting to and from work, it might turn your dream job into a nightmare. Think about all the little details before accepting a new role.
A path for growth
When you find a job that is the right fit for now, that is great. What makes the job a fantastic fit is if there is a clear path for growth. It is very important to think about what you need now as well as look toward the future.
Does the company invest in professional growth and training for the team? Do they promote from within? Are there upward movement opportunities? How do they coach you to take the next step?
A job that is the right fit
Just because you have been offered a job does not mean you have to take it or take the first offer. You want to make sure any career movement is the right step. Think about these areas and if your potential new job meets your requirements before automatically accepting. If something does not quite meet your needs, you may be able to negotiate that aspect depending on what it is and how far apart you are from the offer.
Remember, you want to take a job with longevity in mind, and it is okay to ensure that the next job you take is the right fit.
