It is just as important to recognize interview green flags as it is red flags.

Green flags in an interview can help you determine that a company and role are right for you. They will give you confidence when accepting an offer and can give you a deeper look into the company culture and your future manager.

Here are some positive interview green flags to look for in your next interview.

9 Interview Green Flags

1. Respect your time
Your time is incredibly valuable, especially if you are trying to squeeze an interview into your lunch break or between meetings. A major interview green flag is when a company respects your time, and your interview starts and stops as scheduled. Great!

2. Clearly defined role
Green flag—the job description is clear. You know exactly what you are going to do for the company and what is expected of you. This probably means the company structure is organized, and there will not be confusion or role bait and switch, where you end up doing multiple jobs or something that is wildly different from your experience. Right on!

3. Attention and interest
The interviewer listens and is interested in your work history and what you have to say. A huge interview green flag if they took the time to review your resume before your meeting. It is also positive if they ask value-adding questions about your experience and eliminate distractions.

4. Fantastic culture
People can look for different things in a company culture. Some are seeking a team environment with company lunches and in-office perks, while others might prefer remote work. However, some company culture green flags are likely on everyone’s list. A respectful work environment, unwavering work/life balance, strong benefits package, and care for employee wellbeing all come to mind. Yes, please!

5. Well-defined interview process and onboarding
The company has a defined path for both the interview process and onboarding, and they willingly share it with you. The interviewer can answer your questions about what is next in the interview process, as well as what your first 60-90 days will look like. This means they have thought about the person they are bringing on and want that person to have a positive experience. Thank you!

6. Salary discussed matches job listing
Having the salary posted on the job listing and it being the same as what is discussed is another interview green flag. It should be a reasonable range for the role and fit your requirements. You should feel confident if an offer comes through that it will be within the range discussed, and commensurate with your experience and the value you will bring to the company.

7. Mission and values speak to you
You want to feel good about where you work! When the mission and value statements from the company match your own values—green flag! It is especially important that you feel the company walks the walk. Try to get a sense of that through some of your questions at the end of the interview.

8. Answers all your questions
Speaking of questions, you should always come prepared with questions for the end of your interview. The interviewer taking time to answer all your questions is a green flag. Asking questions shows your interest in the company, and they should want to engage with you on your interest and clarifying points.

9. Conversation comes easily
If you are meeting with your future manager, it is a great sign if conversation comes easily. Not only are you able to communicate with comprehension about your experience, but perhaps you connect on something else such as pets, a TV show recommendation, or other items outside the scope of work, but still in a professional sphere. If communicating with the person goes smoothly during the interview, it is likely that the manager will be a good fit once you are on the team.
