It might be clear to you that it is time for a new job. Or, you might not have decided if you are ready to move on.
If you are struggling to figure out if you should start job hunting, here are seven signs that it is time to freshen up your resume and hit the job boards.
7 signs you are ready to move on from your current job
1. You are bored
You have mastered your current role and can pretty much do it in your sleep. Even though you have asked for more responsibility or to be brought in on other projects, your growth with the company is stagnant. If there is no room for career growth or promotion, this could be a sign it is time to leave your job for something more challenging.
Tip: If you are happy at the company but bored and have not expressed interest in taking on more responsibility, have that conversation with your manager before starting your job hunt.
2. Poor environment
If your work environment is toxic for some reason including poor or abusive management, negative company culture, overrun with office politics, or other issues, that is certainly a sign it is time to start looking for a new job.
3. Overworked and burning out
You could have a great boss and team and still be stuck in a position where you are overworked. If the company is understaffed, or the demands of the role are too much, you need to make your physical and mental health a priority. If you are experiencing burnout, anxiety, exhaustion, or even loss of sleep, it is time to move on from your current job.
4. Low pay and benefits
You might enjoy your work but need more in terms of pay and benefits. If your company is underpaying you or not providing good benefits, you should consider that as a sign you should leave. Do some research online in your area and see what others in a similar role are receiving. If you are undercompensated, you have the option to speak with your manager and request a raise or look for a new option. If you are paid on par with others in your role at similar companies, it might be time to seek a promotion with higher pay or new career path.
5. You do not care
It is important to feel interest in your work and pride in a job well done. If you are checked out and do not care about your performance, it is going to show. If this is the case, you might even want to consider some career exploration steps to help you find a better fit.
6. Instability
When your company goes through several rounds of layoffs, loses top talent, or is always in turmoil, it is time to get out. Be active about finding a position with a more secure company. Constantly being worried about layoffs, structural changes, or if you are going to get paid is a sign to find something more stable.
7. You are daydreaming about leaving
If you are thinking about leaving or searching job boards “just to see what is out there,” then you already have one foot out the door. This is a clear sign that you are ready for a change in job or company.
It is time to move on
It is clear for some that they want to move on from their current role, while others may have to take a deeper look. It can be especially difficult to take that next step if you like your work or boss, but if any of these signs are true for you it is time to consider moving on from your current job.
